Nancy Petruney Obituary

Nancy Jean Petruney, entered into rest on February 25, 2025, in Bradford, PA (formerly of Tiona).  The second daughter, born to the late Lawrence Kabelin and Anna Margareta (Larson) on February 6, 1939, in Warren, Pa.  She graduated from Warren High School in 1957 and attended Buffalo Bible Institute from 1960 to 1963.  She was employed at Sylvania from 1963 to 1967.  Her dream was to marry and have children.

On July 8, 1967, she married the love of her life, John “Spit” Petruney, at the St. Paul’s Lutheran Church in Warren, PA.  They briefly lived in Sheffield, moving to Tiona in 1969, starting a family soon after.  She cared deeply for her husband, son and daughter, and was the central figure in their lives.  Her favorite part of the day was when John got home from work and the kids from school.  She was a devoted member to the Sheffield Methodist Church, teaching Sunday School to elementary and high school grades.

She was a self-taught artist in pen and ink, oils, watercolors, and especially pastels.  Many of her paintings and drawings were of what she had on hand, household objects and fabrics, set up on old wooden tables.  “As for the subject matter, I kept an open mind and visually searched for unusual subjects”, (taken from her art journal).  In the summer months during family outings, it was plein air and winter months, in her “studio” (usually the kitchen table) from photos of family pets. As a member of the Warren Art League, she was both a mentee and mentor, giving and receiving advice to fellow artists.  Her talent led her to commissioned work, from personal aet collectors, special events, businesses to local churches’ cookbook covers.  She was a four year Best of Show at the Henry Rouse Art Show and has art in its permanent collection.

She will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving her, especially her son, Robert and his wife Tammy, LaSalle, IL, her daughter, Tanya of Comstock, TX, her youngest sister, Christine Stevens, several cousins, nieces and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband of 57 years John, and infant son Eric and her oldest sister Elsie.

Nancy’s family will welcome friends on Sunday, March 2, 2025, from 1:00 p.m. to 2:30 p.m. at the Borden Funeral Home, 203 West Main Street in Sheffield, PA.  Services will follow at 2:30 p.m. with Pastor Ruth Ann Varotto, presiding.  Burial will follow at the Sheffield Cemetery. A luncheon will be provided by the ladies of the Sheffield United Methodist following the burial.
