Mona Champion Obituary

Mona M. (Barr) Korchak Champion, 77, of 17 Pickering Street, Sheffield, passed away at Hamot Medical Center in Erie on Thursday, April 20, 2023, following a lengthy illness.

Mona was born in Heilwood, PA, on February 4, 1946, the daughter of Nelson and Lilly Rodgers Barr. She moved with her family to Sheffield as a child and graduated from Sheffield High School in 1963. She married Thomas Korchak on May 16, 1964, and worked as an executive secretary at Blair Corporation for many years while they raised their family. Following Tom’s death, Mona married Douglas Champion and moved to Clarksville, VA, where she worked with school children as a teacher aide. While she loved children, Mona seemed to find her true calling when she returned to Sheffield after Doug passed away. She began working as the Activities Director at the Ruth M. Smith Home, not only planning daily activities, but also family events, and special day trips. She adored “her residents,” and always sought the very best for each of them. Mona was a member of St. Anthony Roman Catholic Church where she had been a Religious Education teacher and program director. She loved spending time with her family, reading, crafts, and baking. She was always busy with church and community events, and planning events, raffles and fundraisers to benefit the Sheffield area.

In addition to her parents and husbands, Mona was predeceased by her brothers Joseph, Ernie, Claire, Samuel, and Raymond Barr, and her sister Erlamond Barr Champion. She is survived by her four sons Steven (Frances) of Corsica, Scott (Marcia) of DuBois, Thomas of Warren, and Timothy (Sarah) of Sheffield; grandchildren Kaitlyn Korchak (Jordan Lancaster), Kyle Korchak, Mari Korchak (Shelby McGary), Abigail Korchak (Luke Mazzafaro), Rachel (Chris) Britton, and Tessa Korchak; great-grandchildren Parker and Harper McGary, and Brooklyn and Aspen Korchak; sister Edna Barr Lindsey and sisters-in-law Gail Sondericker Barr and Janyce Bross Barr; special friends Ines Lindsey and Andre Roche; and several nieces and nephews.

Mona’s family will welcome family & Friends on Monday April 24, 2023, from 4 p.m. – 8 p.m. at the Borden Funeral Home of Sheffield.  A mass of Christian burial will be celebrated at 10 a.m. on Tuesday, April 25, 2023 at St. Anthony’s Roman Catholic Church in Sheffield with Father Stephen Schreiber as celebrant. (Everyone, please meet at the church).  Burial will follow at Sheffield Cemetery.
