Dick McKown Obituary

Sherman Richard “Dick” McKown, 79, a lifelong resident of Sheffield passed away at home unexpectedly Friday evening, March 10, 2023.  He was born on January 24, 1944, the son of Sherman Elwood McKown & Ardith T. (Lundquist) McKown.  Dick was a graduate of Sheffield High School.  He married the love of his life Glendora “Punky” Smead on April 14, 1962, in McKean County.  Together they raised five children.  Dick retired from Warren State Hospital.  He was protestant by faith.  He was a member of Lakewood Rod & Gun Club, Warren Moose and Clarendon Vets Club.  He was an active board member of the Sheffield Municipal Authority for over 40 years.  In Dick’s earlier years, he enjoyed hunting and camping.  Dick was an avid golfer and could be found weekly on the course with his buddies from Sheffield.  Most of Dick’s greatest joy was his family.  He eagerly looked forward to spending time with his children, grandchildren and great grandchildren.  Dick will be greatly missed by all who had the privilege of knowing and loving him, especially his loving family and his many friends in and around the Sheffield community.

Left behind to cherish Dick’s memory are his children: Sherman (Craig) McKown, Scott McKown, Richard McKown, Jodi McKown Lander and  husband Daniel, and Michael McKown and wife Krista; his grandchildren: Amber McKown Thomas and husband Michael, Sherman (Kris) McKown, Evan McKown, Mattea McKown, Caleb McKown, Connor McKown and wife Rachel, Hayley McKown, Alexis McKown , Madison McKown and Savannah McKown; great grandchildren: Michael Thomas, Kalyssa Thomas, Jayden McKown, Paisley McKown, Sherman Joseph McKown and Eileene Butler.

He was preceded in death by his parents, his wife, his sisters, Rebecca Petruney, Judith Blum, Patricia Peterson, his daughter in law Karen L. McKown and his faithful companion (Mini Schnauzer) Hogan.  There will be no public calling hours observed.  Private family visitation will be held on Tuesday, March 14, 2023, at the Borden Funeral Home of Sheffield.  Burial will take place at the Sheffield Cemetery.  His family respectfully asks that memorial donations be made to the Erie Chapter of the MS Society, The American Heart Association or the Sheffield Volunteer Fire Department.
